A washer that fills and agitates but won't spin is one of the most common laundry room complaints we see. The good news is that the cause is usually mechanical, not electrical, and often fixable in a single visit.
The most frequent culprit is an overloaded or unbalanced load — the machine's sensors will refuse to spin if the load isn't evenly distributed, both to protect the drum bearings and to keep the unit from walking across the floor. Try redistributing the clothes and running the spin cycle again.
If rebalancing doesn't help, a worn drive belt is next on the list, especially on older top-load models. You may hear a burning rubber smell or notice the drum spins freely by hand but not during a cycle. On front-load washers, a failed door lock switch can also prevent the spin cycle from ever starting, since the machine won't spin with an unlocked door as a safety measure.
Less commonly, a clogged drain pump can trick the machine into thinking it's still full of water, which blocks the spin cycle entirely. This usually comes with standing water left in the drum after a finished cycle.
